The Mushkegowuk Cup was first held in Moosonee in 2007 to bring young hockey players together from First Nations in the Mushkegowuk Council Territory. Over the years the tournament has grown by to include teams from Northwestern Ontario and Quebec.

The tournament was cancelled in 2020, 2021 and 2022 due to measures to control the spread of COVID-19.

The hockey tournament is expected to boost $4M to local economy in the City of Timmins.
